Improving working conditions in your clothing supply chain

2: Discrimination & Harassment

Like in any other workplace, discrimination and harassment can happen in clothing factories. Worldwide, around 90% of garment factory workers are women, and problems based on gender are one of the most commonly reported types of discrimination. In some production countries, over 50% of women workers have reported being verbally abused or harassed. In some countries, many garment workers are migrants from other areas, and may face discrimination on that count.

You can help to reduce harassment in factories, and promote equality, especially for women workers. Sometime it’s the basics that need to be checked – do women have decent bathrooms, and are they allowed to use them when necessary? Other issues need more research – like checking to see if men and women are getting equal pay for similar work.
